Symphony

for a Dying Star

September 2016

To help raise awareness of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) telescope, we collaborated with the National Observatory of Japan to create the ALMA Music Box. With radio signal data captured by the telescope from the dying star R Sculptoris, we produced 70 music discs that can be played on this customized music box. The resulting somber melody is the requiem to the distant dying star 950 light-years away. The music box has been exhibited at various mueum including 21_21 Design Sight, Kanazawa 21st Century Museum, and Ukraine Arsenal Museum.

At the Kyoto Okazaki Loops Music Festival, the music box performed together with the full Kyoto Symphony Orchestra in front of 2000 audiences, and has also became an album “Music for a Dying Star” in collaboration with 11 musicians. My role in this project is to design the stage visuals and motion graphics for the concert. The motion graphics are meticulously rendered based on the outer space themes, such as telescope, star trail time lapse, and galaxy. The two-hour concert is an immersive mixture of astronomical art and different genres of music.
