Symphony
for a Dying Star
September 2016
To help raise awareness of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) telescope, we collaborated with the National Observatory of Japan to create the ALMA Music Box. Based on the radio signal data captured by the telescope from the dying star R Sculptoris, we produced 70 music discs that can be played on this customized music box. The resulting somber melody is the requiem to the distant dying star 950 light-years away.
In front of 2000 audiences, the music box performed together with the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with 11 well-known musicians at the Kyoto Okazaki Loops Music Festival. My role in this project is to design the stage visuals and videos for the concert. The concert visuals are meticulously composed with the outer space elements such as nebula, star trail time-lapse, galaxy, etc. The two-hour concert is an immersive mixture of astronomical art and different genres of music. ALMA Music Box has also been exhibited at various museums including 21_21 Design Sight, Kanazawa 21st Century Museum, and Ukraine Arsenal Museum.
